E*Trade buying HarrisDirect

Just got an email today announcing that E*Trade will be buying HarrisDirect.  HarrisDirect is the online trading company I’ve been using to pretend I know how to trade stocks online.  They’ve delightfully indulged my illusions of grandeur very nicely and it’ll be sad to see them go….

Trade stocks?  I hope you’re maxing out a Roth IRA first.  As well as 401k (obviously).

No and No.  But my kids college savings’ accounts are doing quite well.

I’ll be poor, but as long as Sabrina and Adrian are well educated, that’s all that matters.

Ummm...no!  I am not working my ass off so that I can be poor.  Also, I am not financing my kids collegiate education.  I will help them where I can, but if they want to go to college, they can A) work their butts off and get a scholarship, B) work through college and maybe take longer or, C) join the military and take advantage of the GI Bill.  They will get more out of it, IMO, if they work for it.

The military is not a bad option but you have to look at all the aspects of what you are asking your kids to do.  I have been in for about a decade and only recently been able to get into school.  Not because I was slacking, well actually I was, but more so because of the “Mission first” idealolgy that drives the military.  Granted the military is great for telling you about the education but you have to wait until it is convient for them to let you go to school before you actually attend classes.

True.  However, I was referring more to the aspect of going to college after one got out, as I did and my brother is doing now.

I just got done reading a wonderful book on personal finances.  It’s called “The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke” by Suze Orman.  She gives great financial advice for younger generations.  We also Tivo her show every Saturday night on CNBC.  I highly recommend both.
